Coloplast Corporation is located
in North Mankato, Minnesota. It is a Danish pharmaceutical
company that manufactures and distributes specialty
skin care products to the medical market. In 1997, Coloplast
decided to start production of their unique hydrosorbic
wound dressing in the United States. The manufacture
of this unique product demanded not only highly specialized
equipment, but also a very strictly regulated manufacturing
environment.
In September of 1997, Schwickerts
began addressing the development of a clean room facility
that not only met the product manufacturing requirements,
but also satisfied both the FDA standards and ISO requirements.
The clean room facility was to be built in what had
previously been a receiving and warehouse storage area.
While Coloplast Corporation designated the equipment
location and size, Schwickerts began developing
a HVAC system that could maintain a strictly defined
environment during all phases of the manufacturing process.
This environment was classified as a class 100,000 clean
room. All project initiatives were coordinated with
overseas specialists to perfectly replicate the manufacturing
and process conditions already constructed in the companys
European facilities.

Aside from the already stringent
environmental requirements, Coloplast Corporation also
wanted the clean room to be a corporate showcase. This
meant the architectural design, as well as the HVAC systems
that supported the environment needed to accommodate a
wide variety of windowing systems. Optimal visual access
also presented the development team with a new series
of aesthetically driven specifications.
