One hour after the devastating
tornado swept Saint Peter, Schwickerts arrived
to begin assessing the storm damage. While access to
the campus was restricted, plans were made to return
on Monday, March 30. At 6 a.m., on Monday morning, 90
of Schwickerts roofers, sheetmetal, HVAC and service
technicians arrive at Gustavus Adolphus College to continue
damage assessment and prepare a plan for rebuilding.
Between the dates of March 30 and April 2, 1998, Schwickerts
crews secured 25 temporary roof coveringstotaling
approximately 430,000 square feet. The crews worked
1416 hour shifts and used generators for both
lighting and electrical power. Schwickerts suppliers
rallied to provide all of the necessary materials needed
to maintain their aggressive production schedules.
During the week of April 12, 1998,
Schwickerts is awarded the exclusive contract
for completing all permanent roof structures by August
15, 1998, which marked the beginning of the fall semester.
During the reconstruction of the campus facilities,
straight-line winds damaged both the temporary roofing
and the new construction three separate times, temporarily
delaying the original production schedule.
On Saturday, August 15, 1998, Schwickerts
completed the final inspection at Gustavus Adolphus
College, meeting their deadline in 109 days. Not only
was the job completed exactly on schedule, but all 445,270
square feet of roofs received a perfect 10
rating from Carlisle SynTec Systems.
