Project Scope of Work

Dating over 100 years old, Barton, Lyon and Freeman are three of the oldest dormitories at Iowa State University (ISU). While each carry its own history, all three combined exemplify an extraordinary level of history on the campus.

Over the last century, the dormitories’ original condition deteriorated, leading the college to hire contractors to complete updates on the buildings. As a result, in May 2018, ISU hired Schwickert’s as the Roofing and Architectural Sheet Metal Contractor to restore the dormitories back to their original conditions.

Working quickly and diligently before students returned for fall semester, Schwickert’s began the restoration at the dormitories. They removed the slate roofing from each dormitory, and then replaced it with CertainTeed asphalt roofing. They then removed the terrace roofs and replaced each with a Carlisle EPDM roofing system and air barrier. Lastly, Schwickert’s restored the integrity of the dormers with Louisiana Pacific Siding, new trim and fresh paint.

Meeting the deadline, Schwickert’s wrapped up the project in August 2018, leaving Iowa State University visitors and students the opportunity to enjoy the original timeless history of each dormitory.

Over the years, Schwickert’s has also completed additional projects at the Iowa State University Campus, including work at Bessey Hall, Memorial Union and Knoll.
